Canton
A canton refers to any quarter of a flag but generally refers to the upper hoist (left) quarter of the flag. An example of a canton flag would be the United States flag. (See Diagram 1.1 to the right.)
A canton does not require that the quarter of the flag be inset with a solid color or a specific design. Please choose the color or style of canton below to continue to piece together the puzzle.
However, a canton flag is a term used when the canton on an otherwise undivided flag uses another flag, for example, Civil Ensign of Australia utilizes the Union Jack in the upper hoist quarter. For more on the Civil Ensign of Australia visit the Union Jack canton page.
